Both are Can-Am three-wheelers with two wheels up front and one in the back, but they are built for different riders. The Ryker is the lighter, simpler, lower-cost machine: a Rotax 600 or 900 ACE engine, a twist-and-go CVT automatic, and adjustable UFit foot pegs and handlebars. The Spyder is the bigger, more powerful touring and sport-touring platform: a Rotax 1330 ACE three-cylinder, a semi-automatic six-speed with a thumb shifter, more storage, and more wind and weather protection on the RT.

A Slingshot is a three-wheel autocycle. You sit side by side in an open cockpit with a steering wheel, pedals, and seat belts, and it is powered by a Polaris ProStar 2.0L four-cylinder rated at 178 hp (S and SL) or 203 hp (R). It is titled and registered as a motorcycle in Texas, but it drives like a car and does not require a motorcycle license (see below).

For a Can-Am Spyder or Ryker, Texas requires a Class M motorcycle license. Texas offers a three-wheel-only Class M option through an approved three-wheel motorcycle safety course, so you do not have to learn on two wheels first. For a Polaris Slingshot, Texas classifies the vehicle as an autocycle, so a standard Class C driver license is all you need. Always confirm current requirements with the Texas Department of Public Safety before you ride.

Every Can-Am Ryker is a CVT automatic: twist the throttle and go, no clutch and no shifting. Can-Am Spyders come with either the SE6 semi-automatic (thumb-shift up, automatic downshift, no clutch lever) or a SM6 manual on some F3 models. Polaris Slingshots come with a five-speed manual or the AutoDrive automated manual, which has no clutch pedal.
